“A pearl is a beautiful thing that is produced by an injured life. It is the tear [that results] from the injury of the oyster. The treasure of our being in this world is also produced by an injured life. If we had not been wounded, if Arthritis and pain are common injuries we all sustain as we journey through life. Like the oyster, I hope to be able to help my patients gain pearls of wisdom, by learning about their specific type of arthritis and source of their pains, so that they are able to develop healthier lifestyle habits, which are very important in the successful long-term management of arthritis. Biography & Background: I grew up in the multi-ethnic and multi-cultural environment of Hawaii and came from a family of teachers, both of which continue to serve me well in my medical practice today. I have been in private practice since 2002, and have practiced in multi-ethnic and multi-cultural Fremont, CA since March, 2004. When I arrived in Fremont, there were no arthritis exercise educational classes available and thus I worked with the Northern California Chapter of the Arthritis Foundation, to bring Arthritis Foundation Exercise Program, and Arthritis Foundation Aquatic Program here to Fremont community; most recently, Arthritis Foundation Tai Chi Program. Clinical Interests: I specialize in common forms of arthritis, like osteoarthritis and gout, osteoporosis and related autoimmune diseases like rheumatoid arthritis, lupus, Sjogren’s syndrome, myositis, scleroderma and vasculitis. Autoimmune diseases frequently present with many different signs and symptoms, which may be difficult to diagnose without specialized “detective-work” training that a board certified rheumatologist has had. I also enjoy “figuring out difficult cases” and coordinating the care of complex cases like patients with scleroderma related pulmonary arterial hypertension or vasculitis. Research Interests: My research interests include various forms of inflammatory arthritis, like rheumatoid arthritis, ankylosing spondylitis, psoriatic arthritis, lupus and gout. Learning about the latest diagnostic and therapeutic options for patients gives me and my patients, regardless of their insurance status, hope for the future that there will one day be at least many treatment options for the various forms of arthritis, if not many cures. Current clinical trial recruitments. Note: Dr Shibuya works Mon, Tue, Wed (AM only), Thu, every other Friday. |

Fremont Rheumatology Arthritis, Osteoporosis, and Auto-Immune Diseases |
Personal Statement: "Doctor" means teacher, from the Latin docere, to teach. "Physician" means "naturalist", from the Greek word for nature. As a Rheumatologist, I enjoy teaching patients about their specific type of autoimmune disease or arthritis, and how to be healthier through medical management and wholesome lifestyle habits. By the time patients are referred to me, often they have already seen multiple specialists but have no clear diagnosis. I enjoy working up such difficult cases and managing a patient’s complex symptoms. Biography and Background: I was born in Thailand after my parents emigrated from Vietnam, and I grew up in a diverse cultural climate in the San Francisco Bay Area. I am grateful to be able to practice Rheumatology in Fremont and help the patients within the community where I grew up. Clinical Interests: I specialize in various forms of arthritis including osteoarthritis, gout, rheumatoid arthritis, psoriatic arthritis, and ankylosing spondylitis; osteoporosis; and autoimmune diseases like scleroderma, mixed connective disease, myositis, and Sjogren syndrome, with a particular interest in lupus and its complications.
