Signs and Symptoms
Osteoporosis is a silent disease, which can progress without noticeable
symptoms until the slightest trauma causes a fracture. By the time this
occurs, the disease is in its advanced stages.
People with osteoporosis tend to break bones in the spine, hip, and wrist,
but fractures can also occur in forearms, feet, and toes. Vertebral
fractures lead to chronic back pain and loss of height, causing kyphosis,
the characteristic bulge in the upper back. Multiple thoracic fractures can
lead to restrictive lung disease, and lumbar fractures may alter abdominal
anatomy, leading to constipation, abdominal pain, distention, reduced
appetite, and premature satiety. A broken hip, caused by fracture of the
neck of the femur, occurs more often in older or elderly women. Fractures
may also incur fatal complications, such as fat or pulmonary embolism,
hemorrhage, and shock.
